Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL)
What Scottsdale's ESL overlay means if you are building or remodeling in north Scottsdale.
Much of north Scottsdale's desert and mountain land falls under the City's Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) overlay, which requires part of each lot to be preserved as natural area open space and protects washes, ridges and native vegetation.
Whether and how it applies is confirmed parcel by parcel.
Separately, check the lot's plat and community guidelines for a defined building envelope, which limits where the home can sit.
